Ogura Industrial Corp. is not only committed to the environment but was chosen to create a generating system that could engage with the main wooden gears built on windmills in the Netherlands in 1851. The Ogura MMC electric clutch with high torque and compact design for long life was used to drive the 10 kW windmill generator. The challenge was to create a generating system that could interlace with the wooden gear. A special gear of rollers, similar to roller chain was created. Plastic rollers drive a right angle gearbox into the clutch and pancake generator to save space. This allowed the entire compilation to fit on one side of the wooden gear with no changes to the windmill’s exterior, also preserving the historic design of the windmill.
The speed up ratio between the wooden gear and the plastic roller gear is 10:1, allowing the generator to turn between 40 and 240 rpm. The clutch will automatically disengage if wind speed causes the wheel to turn faster than 240 rpm. This protects the life of the generator. Most of the electricity produced by the generator is consumed by the mill and any excess capacity can also be fed back into the national grid, saving energy and providing an eco-friendly environment. Stober Drives offers many different gearing options for various applications. Stober’s gearbox efficiency has proven to save money when compared to less efficient gearing systems. In one STOBER case study, converting 111 worm gears to helical bevel units and changing to a high efficiency motor had an energy savings of $23,000 per year based on 8,000 hours of runtime per year at a cost of $0.076 per kWh.
